Stomata regulate convective flow within the gas canals of the sacred lotus, Nelumbo nucifera

چکیده
Lotus, Nelumbo nucifera, posses a specialised efflux organ in the centre of their leaves, which connects the gas canals in the leaves and stems with the atmosphere through the apertures of large stomata. The role of these large central plate stomata in regulating air flow through the gas canals were examined on excised leaves and on intact plants in situ. The stomata show a diurnal cycle, closing at midday then opening during the evening and night. They act as exhaust valves, releasing pressurised air from the adjacent leaf blade and gas canals when open, preventing efflux while closed. Measurements of air flow within the petiolar gas canals of the lotus leaves show different patterns in the canals connected with the central plate stomata compared with those that only connect with the leaf blade. Flow begins in the morning, flowing up the petiole to the atmosphere through the canals connected with the central plate, and down to the rhizome through those connecting only with the leaf blade. But near midday these flow patterns change abruptly, coincident with stomatal closure, and can stop or even reverse direction. This constitutes the first evidence of stomata regulating convective air flow. Possible benefits gained from this behaviour are considered.

Genome-wide identification and characterization of GRAS transcription factors in sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera)
The GRAS gene family is one of the most important plant-specific gene families, which encodes transcriptional regulators and plays an essential role in plant development and physiological processes. The GRAS gene family has been well characterized in many higher plants such as Arabidopsis, rice, Chinese cabbage, tomato and tobacco. In this study, we identified 38 GRAS genes in sacred lotus (Nel...

PREMISE OF THE STUDY Sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) is a perennial aquatic herbaceous plant of ecological, ornamental, and economic importance. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play an important role in plant development. However, reports of miRNAs and their role in sacred lotus have been limited. METHODS Using the homology search of known miRNAs with genome and transcriptome contig sequences, we employed...

Genomic resources such as single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs), insertions and deletions (InDels) and SSRs (simple sequence repeats) are essential for crop improvement and better utilization in genetic breeding. However, the resources for the sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.) are still limited. In the present study, to dissect large-scale genomic molecular marker resources for sacred lot...

Sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) regulates temperature in its floral chamber to 32 degrees C to 35 degrees C across ambient temperatures of 8 degrees C to 40 degrees C with heating achieved through high alternative pathway fluxes. In most alternative oxidase (AOX) isoforms, two cysteine residues, Cys(1) and Cys(2), are highly conserved and play a role in posttranslational regulation of AOX. Furt...
